If you believe that your research experience matches any of our research
directions and have a strong interest, please send your cv and a brief
cover letter to Dr. Fang at jfang@binghamton.edu at your earliest convenience.
A pool of applications for postdoctoral positions is continuously maintained,
and we are carefully evaluating all the applications.
Only short-listed applicants will be contacted. Three
recommendation letters are essential if you are shortlisted.
We strongly prefer to offer postdoctoral opportunities to recent Ph.D.
graduates with a strong desire to establish a track record of high-impact
publications that will make them competitive for an independent research
position - either a junior faculty position in the US or internationally
or an equivalent position at a research institute or company. Postdoctoral
Associates are expected to be critical thinkers and diligent experimentalists,
to have good writing and speaking skills (or great potential to develop
these skills), to generate accurate lab records, to help maintain and
(when appropriate) procure lab equipment, and to assist graduate and
undergraduate researchers.
Presently, this group no longer accepts any short-term visiting scholars
(≤12 months) due to insufficient research duration and our limited lab
space.
Q: I have a great interest of being a graduate student in your group.
How can I apply for and what are the general requirements?
A: This research group accepts suitable graduate students from both
Chemistry Department and
Multidisciplinary Program in Materials Science & Engineering. Initially,
you should apply for admission and financial aid in either Chemistry
Department or Multidisciplinary Program in Materials Science & Engineering
through Graduate School. The required application materials include
application form, personal statement and resume, letters of recommendation,
transcripts, GRE test scores, as well as application fees and payment
form. On-line application is encouraged. Both September admission and
January admission are possible. Usually, a graduate student will have
to choose her/his advisor (research group) within the first year. For
chemistry students, the scores of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
in both General and Chemistry Subjects are useful. To be competitive,
high GRE scores are desirable. If your native language is not English,
you are also required to submit your TOEFL score. The minimum score
of TOEFL required by this department is 600, although special considerations
may also be taken into account.
Please bear in mind,
in order to join this group, three recommendation letters are essential.
MSc degree in Chemistry or a closely related field will definitely add
an advantage.
Q: Can you provide more information about the Student Financial Support?
A: The selected students are normally offered Teaching Assistantships.
Currently, Assistantship stipends for incoming students are or more
than $20,750. This includes an $18,000 Teaching/Research Assistantship
for the academic year and a $3,100 Teaching/Research Assistantship for
the summer (2 months). For each excellent student (higher GPA with outstanding
research performance), there is also a great chance of accepting one
of student awards/fellowships through the departmental Student Awards
Program. Individual research advisors may provide supplementary Research
Assistantships for their outstanding students as well. All students
in good academic standing will receive continued support in subsequent
years, either as Teaching Assistants or Research Assistants. These appointments
allow students to devote full time to thesis research. All students
receiving assistantships in the Department during the academic year
also receive full Tuition Scholarships.
Q: I am a foreigner PhD student. In my home country, we have an exchange
study program for fully or partially supporting current PhD candidates
to study in US for a certain period of time. Can I apply to stay and
study in your group?
A: We have received many applications in which the students/scholars
are supported by foreigner organizations, such as Educational Program
of Turkey and China Scholarship Council. It is dependent on case to
case. Presently, we no longer accept any short-term visiting scholar
(≤12 months) due to the insufficient research duration and our limited
lab space.
